Surroundings / Environment - Open call for artists

Introduction

Magma Art Space is very happy to announce the open call Surroundings / ENVIRONMENT, aimed at artists of all nationalities based in Iceland. The selected artworks will be exhibited in November 2023 in the historical town of San Miniato, Italy.

The theme: Surroundings / Environment.

Our surroundings are the sum of things around us in our everyday life, while our environment is made by the surroundings with the addition of the emotional aspect on top of that. We can interact daily in multiple environments: work or study; a social, sport or even family environment. On a larger scale, societies and nations we live in can be seen as environments, while offering different degrees of inspiration as our surroundings.

For this show we would like to collect works that explore the way in which the artist act with their surroundings and how the vision of these is shaped by the person’s environment, and vice versa. The goal is to bring the peculiar view of Icelandic artists to into a very different cultural location, also giving all artists the opportunity to exhibit in a place worth of a movie set.

The Open Call specs

• The exhibition will take place in the amazing ancient space called Via Angelica, an old chapel hidden in an ex Dominican monastery located in the historical town of San Miniato, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. This is a wonderful space that had hosted many art exhibitions in time, and can be fully arranged according to the show’s needs.
• The show will be part of an internationally famous festival that sees thousands of visitors every year and it will be open from the 10th until the 26th of November 2023
• We are looking for 5 visual artists, preferably be in the form of (but not limited to) photography, painting, drawing, engraving, watercolours etc. Small sculptures or any other 3D artworks will be also be considered.
• The call's deadline is on the 31st of July. After that day we will start the selection process and all artists will receive an answer no later than the 7th of August. We will select 3 artworks from the body of work submitted by each artist.
• The shipping/delivery of the artworks will be sole responsibility of the artist. All artworks should be received no later than the 31st of October 2023, and will be shipped back after the event, during the week from the 27th November to the 1st December 2023. The artists will make sure that the artworks get to the address in a timely manner and all shipping costs (in and out of Italy) must be paid in advance .
• The event has no participation costs for the artists, however Magma Art Space will retain a 40% commission in case of sale.
• All promotional costs related to the event will be covered.
• A catalogue will be printed for the occasion, in English and Italian. 
• Experts in the art industry will examine the exhibition and select one artist to have a personal exhibition in Tuscany in 2024/25.

Please send your cv and a small introduction to info@magma-artspace.com adding Surroundings / ENVIRONMENT in the subject. Please also explain the reasons why you would like to participate, and attach a pdf of the works you would like to present.
